How would passers-by react to a man kicking puppies?

Dogs are referred to as ‘man’s best friend’, but can we say we are always as faithful?
In a MailOnline experiment we sent our team to a busy London canal with a black bin bag filled with stuffed animals and a recording of whimpering puppies noises.
For four hours the barking plastic bag was kicked, hit and shaken by the water’s edge.

We wanted to to see if anyone would stop to save the bag of ‘helpless dogs’. So what reactions did we get?
Many people stared. Several even stopped and looked like they were going to confront our journalists.
One even exclaimed, ‘There’s a dog in that bag!’ But they all eventually decided to keep on walking.
Finally a woman on her own stopped and asked to be given the bag. She was the only one.
After she was told it was a social experiment she said: ‘I wanted to do more. But didn’t want to confront a violent man, so I walked away to phone the police.’

The RSPCA investigates more than 140,000 complaints of cruelty every year and rescues almost 120,000 animals.
Dogs are by far the most abused animal in the UK with the animal charity receiving a shocking 81,146 calls related to them in 2015.
So, if you witnessed an animal being abused, what would you do?
