“We’ve got dogs with some special needs this year, which is kind of really cool. We’ve got a three-legged dog named Lucky. And I don’t mean that it’s cool that she lost her leg, but I think it’s really cool that she’s out on the field, you know, playing with the big boys. A lot of people didn’t think she could do it but she tried it and we just saw her play.”

STORY: For the 13th year, U.S. network Animal Planet will host its annual Puppy Bowl for those looking for a different type of ruffness while the Super Bowl airs.
Over 80 puppies from 34 shelters and rescue groups around the U.S. were brought to New York for the two day taping of the game.
“We start shooting in October. We shoot hundreds of hours of footage, puppy footage and there is editing. And of course we want it ready to air, you know, before, you know, during the other game that’s on Sunday,” said producer Pat Dempsey.
Each year comes the challenge of making the game unique, this time each dog will be DNA tested to find out what type of player they will be based on their breed.
For the sixth time, Dan Schachner returned as the game referee which provided its challenges.
“We try to think of new fouls every single year. So this year we’ve got illegal use of the tail, which we’re bringing back. And truly offensive pass interference, and of course we’re referring to odor, not to offense,” said Schachner.
Another new element for 2017 were the use of three special needs dogs, including a hearing and sight impaired Australian Shepherd, a deaf English pointer and a terrier born with three legs.
“We’ve got a three-legged dog named Lucky. And I don’t mean that it’s cool that she lost her leg, but I think it’s really cool that she’s out on the field, you know, playing with the big boys. A lot of people didn’t think she could do it but she tried it and we just saw her play.”
Cheering on the teams, Fluff and Ruff, were six rescue rabbits and five guinea pig cheerleaders. A rescue chinchilla and ferret will served as mascots.
The game, which always celebrates adoption awareness, will air on February 5 starting at 3pm/et and will repeat all day and night.
