When a dog gives birth, we generally expect the tiny puppies to bear some kind of resemblance to the mother or father canine.

It’s safe to say two Spanish dog breeders got a rather big surprise after a pair of green puppies was born on June 3rd. Initially, Aida Vallelado Molina, who breeds hunting dogs with her father, thought the newly born pups were dirty.

She attempted to wash the green color off them however the tint remained strong. All the other puppies in the litter are a light golden color, making the other two pups greatly stand out. The pair of green dogs was also smaller and weaker than their littermates.

Sadly, one of them died shortly after birth. Only one green puppy remains alive. Reportedly, the male dog is beginning to lose the green pigment, but he is still very weak and may not survive either.

Local veterinarian Daniel Valverde is now investigating what caused the death of the puppy and the reason behind the odd color. He commented “There are no other recorded cases of this happening in Spanish scientific literature.”

Virological and bacteriological tests are currently underway to find out what caused the pigment to emerge.
