An inspiring video shows a man risking his life to save three puppies trapped under a bridge as the river it crosses was about to flood.

The young man spotted the young dogs trapped under the Puno Bridge over the Ica river in Peru as it passes the Tinguina district near the country’s south-western coast.

The video shows him wading in to pick up the dogs one by one, then hand them up to helpful passers-by who are climbing down the river’s steep banks to reach him.

The bridge’s large stone supports prevent him from staying on the bank for the journey, forcing him to go into the river.

With the Ica swelling by the minute, the man risked being swept away by the fast-flowing waters.

The pups wriggle as they are picked up, but the man and his helpers manage to hold on to all of them and get them to safety.

Peru’s Ica River is dry for much of the year but is known to cause devastating floods during the rainy season.

The city of Ica, capital of the Ica region on Peru’s west coast, was badly flooded in 1998, an event probably related to that season’s El Nino event.
